Come to the beautiful Philippines island of Palawan and make a difference through a range of valuable community projects, from teaching to building to environmental conservation.

Palawan is a special island of green jungled mountains dotted with fishing villages and surrounded by beautiful blue ocean.

Create your own meaningful adventure through a combination of programs, staying from 2 weeks to many months

Culture Week

An activities and sightseeing week is a great way to commence your stay in a new country. Palawan Culture week is packed full of adventures, cultural excursions and workshops. It includes visits to markets and beautiful beaches, cooking classes, Tagalog language lessons, craft workshops, a trip to Palawan Museum, sightseeing opportunities and of course visits to our project locations.

Help the local children of Palawan improving their English language skills at a local school. This program will provide you with an insight into the Philippine educational system and specifically that of Palawan. You will be teaching English to children within all age groups at either a primary school, secondary school or high school in a fun and practical way and give something back to this beautiful island community!

village healthcare

For medical students or professionals only, this program has you assisting in the healthcare of villagers in one of the most rural areas of Palawan. You will be working in a small hospital or local healthcare centre, working alongside a local doctor or nurse. Additionally, you may be part of a healthcare awareness campaign for children at local schools.

Assist local staff in the day-to-day operations of a childcare facility. Not only will this give you an insight into authentic Filipino life, but you will also get engaged into the day-to-day operations of the kindergarten. The kindergarten is located in the Tigman area of Palawan and the children who attend are between the ages of 3 and 5. Your main purpose will be to communicate with the children using English and teaching them the language in a fun way. Besides teaching, you will also support the local staff with the caretaking of the children. This task can range in activities, from organising classes, playing games and guiding activities to feeding, cutting nails, combing hair and general care.

building for communites

With this project, we assist communities with their housing and help renovate, upgrade and construct communal places and institutions such as schools, healthcare centres, hospitals, community centres, etc. The main construction and renovation activities will consist of painting, building walls, renovating furniture, gardening and so on. Construction experience is not required, anybody can join and give a helping hand

environmental conservations

This project focusses on the rehabilitation of Palawan’s mangroves, a vital habitat for its marine life. This unique ecosystem area serves as a coastal barrier, slowing storm surge, and reducing beach erosion. Other eco-efforts include planting mahogany and moringa tree seeds for the local village.

fishing & agriculture

A unique opportunity to work alongside the local villagers of Palawan in their traditional professions of fishing and agriculture. You will assist the local villagers by joining them in their fishing practices and by working alongside them in the fields and plantations, giving you an extraordinary insight into the culture and livelihood of the local people. You will assist local villagers when they go out fishing, repairing their tools and making fish products. You will also help the villagers in the fields with: the planting of rice and vegetables, cutting/harvesting and other related chores.

Day 1 - (Sunday)

Arrive to Puerto Princesa airport between 10am and 5pm, and after clearing customs you’ll be met by our local team for the transfer to your accommodation, a journey of around 1½ hours. Our accommodation is located in Tigman Village, a small and laid back area just outside of Puerto Princesa City.

Days 2 - 6 (Monday to Friday)

Our co-ordinator will accompany you to your placement location on Monday, introducing you to the permanent local staff so you can get involved straight away. Your placement schedule will vary, some projects have half-day work only, others the full day. Please ask if you’d like to know your expected hours in advance – and if, when you’re there you find you have energy to do more, just speak with the coordinators who will be happy to keep you busy.

Your last day (Saturday)

When it’s time to say goodbye, our team will be glad to assist you with arranging a taxi or advice on public transport – expect to pay around $50 for a taxi to the airport, much less if you take the bus.

your digs

Volunteers share a rustic beach-front accommodation, sleeping in bunk-style room with three to seven other volunteers. Bedding is provided and rooms have air-con. The shared bathrooms have cool showers (BYO towel). A private room en-suite upgrade is available from £85 per week (£42.50pp if twin-shared).

All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

You will be provided with three meals a day on weekdays and two meals per day on weekends. Meals are a mix of Western and Indian food, consisting mainly of vegetarian dishes including rice and vegetables. You are welcome to use the kitchen facilities to cook for yourself or eat out at any of the local and inexpensive restaurants.

facilities & local area

There are no ATMs in the village, though a bus journey of around 40 minutes takes you to town where there are all the services you might need. Laundry services are available in the village at a small cost. Wifi is available throughout, though the reliability can be an issue here in the tropics. Buy a local SIM and data is a more reliable option.

Please be advised that due to jellyfish in the water, it is unlikely that you will be able to swim at the beach close by the accommodation. There is an area near the river or on the other side of the village, which is about a 15 minute walk away, where you will be able to enjoy some time in the water.
