turtle conservation in sri lanka

Turtle conservation is vitally important work, and at this certified project on the beautiful island of Sri Lanka you’ll play an important part in helping four different species of turtle survive. Our centre works with Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Green and Olive Ridley turtles, assisting nature through its rescue and rehab care program as well as its managed approach to reproduction. The rescue and rehabilitation centre works with injured or sick turtles which are often received after suffering traumas or illness. In many cases this is due to ingesting garbage in the ocean or suffering accidental or intentional injury at the hands of people.

Many turtles can be rehabilitated and released back into the wild, though others will never survive alone so we look after these at the centre on a permanent basis. In a separate area we hatch hundreds of turtle eggs, ready for the next generation to be released to the ocean. Getting involved in this process is truly a thrilling experience. Our program begins in Kandy, with an exciting week of fun and activities in the cultural capital of Sri Lanka – the blend of culture and tradition complements perfectly with your beach time and role as a wildlife warrior.

itinerary

Day 1 - (Sunday)

Arrive at Colombo airport and after clearing customs and immigration, you’ll be met by our friendly local team. Please ensure your flight arrives before 6pm as we have a journey of around 3 hours to Kandy. You may find it more comfortable to arrive on Saturday (any flight day or night) and for small fee we’ll provide pick up and one night in a hotel near the airport. Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka is a fantastic place to spend time – located up in the hill-country, Kandy has a deep history and a cultural richness. You’ll love it here!

Days 2 - 6 Activities and Sightseeing Week (Monday-Friday**)

During intro week you will experience various activities, exploring Kandy and its beautiful surrounding areas, and get acquainted with the traditions, culture and people of Sri Lanka. Intro week is packed full of exciting adventures and excursions, and the schedule will look something like this:

• Monday – orientation, basic language lesson, Kandy city tour and welcome dinner with cultural show.
• Tuesday – visit a tea factory, a spice and Ayurvedic garden and go boating on the lake
• Wednesday – Sri Lankan cooking class
• Thursday – Visit the Temple of The Tooth and see how traditional batiks and wood carvings are made
• Friday – hike to the White Buddha statue, visit a Hindu Temple and get an Ayurvedic massage !

Days 7 & 8 (Saturday & Sunday)

Spend Saturday as you please, it is a free day to explore Kandy or beyond. ON Sunday, it’s turtle time!! Set your alarm early as we have a 4am start (ouch!) to take the train out of Kandy – the good news is you’ll be at the beach by mid morning ready for some Indian Ocean action!

Days 9 - 13 (Monday - Friday)

The mission of the turtle project is to conserve turtles and this is achieved in a number of ways - by directly taking care of injured turtles, by enhancing awareness among fishermen and the communities and by increasing the number of turtles in the ocean by releasing hatchlings to the sea. Volunteer duties change according to the season, the weather and the number of participants on hand, but a typical week will include feeding the turtles, cleaning the tanks, the beach and the turtles (hygiene is essential) and assisting with the release of dozens of new born hatchlings. Local project coordinators are with you every step of the way, and you’ll learn heaps about the marine environment as they share their expertise and experience with you.
