helping teach in fiji

''I had a fantastic time in Fiji, it was an incredible, once in a lifetime experience and I will definitely be doing it again!” Courtney

Fiji is a country in much need of external help, especially with its younger population. An under-supply of teaching staff means large class sizes in its public education. In this program you have the choice of working with younger kids at a village kindergarten or schoolchildren in a primary school. Whichever you choose you will be a great help to the teacher and an exciting new presence for the kids.
At our kindergarten project, the kids are aged between 4 and 7 and demand a lot of attention. The class sizes are large so it is difficult for local staff to give each child as much attention as they need. You will help take care of the kids during classes as well as creating some sessions and activities of your own with crafts, songs and games. By showing initiative and enthusiasm the options are endless.

If you choose to help at a Primary School you will provide a great service both to the kids and the teachers – you’ll assist the class teacher who does his or her best to serve the students spread across a variety of ages and educational levels. Volunteers with teaching experience and those without will both be able to make a very significant and worthwhile contribution. The experienced teacher will find the freedom to be creative and design their own lesson plans, whilst those with less or no teaching experience will have whatever support and guidance is needed from our Teaching Centre. You may choose to focus on Physical Education, Music, or Arts and Crafts or any other specialist area you may have.

itinerary

Days 1 (Sunday)

Arrive to Nadi between 6am and 6pm and after clearing customs and immigration you’ll be met by our local team for the transfer to Sigatoka. If you are unable to arrive during the pickup window, then you should fly in on the Saturday and stay overnight (we will be happy to arrange your accommodation).

Day 2-6 Activities & Sights Week (Monday-Friday)

Intro week is packed full of exciting adventures and cultural excursions where we explore Sigatoka and its beautiful surrounding areas and get acquainted with Fijian culture. Various crafts give Fiji a unique identity that along with traditional etiquette and local architecture tells a story of a deep island culture.

During the week you’ll challenge your artistic and creative side through weaving and Fijian cooking classes and we experience the traditional Fijian welcome called “Kava Ceremony”.

You’ll also take a Fijian language lesson.

Days 7 and 8 (Saturday to Sunday)

Spend your free time as you please, your weekends are yours to enjoy and explore.

Day 9-13 (Monday-Friday)

Time to get to class !! Your teaching schedule will vary, but generally you should expect around 3 hours of classroom time each morning Monday to Friday. There may also be the option to spend the afternoon session in school, and this may also be available to those doing the kinder program. Alternatively, spend a couple of hours in the afternoon lesson planning as a group.

In kinder you’ll be getting creative with arts, crafts and songs. In school, you’ll assist the teacher with maths, computers or English teaching or you may choose to focus on Physical Education, music, arts and crafts or any other area of expertise you may have.

In school there is a dress code to follow, as per Fijian Ministry of Education's guidelines.

Your last day (Saturday)

The return airport transfer is straightforward to arrange, and our team will be glad to assist. Just save some money for the fare.
