insyte to the programme

In the state of Rajasthan, the Royal city of Udaipur is one of India’s must-visit locations with its palaces and temples set majestically around glorious Lake Pichola.

Here in this fantastic setting you will make a genuine difference to the lives of Indian children by volunteering at a kindergarten or a special school.

Whichever you choose you will be a great help to the local teaching staff and an exciting new presence for the kids.

At the kinder, the kids are aged between 3 and 5 and demand a lot of attention. You will help take care of the kids during kinder sessions as well as creating some activities of your own with crafts, songs and games. You can add particular value and have fun by teaching basic English language.

If you choose to help at the special school you will provide a great service both to the kids and the teachers. Expect classes of kids from 6-10 years of age – one school educates children with mental disabilities and another is for kids with hearing impairment. These schools combine a non-formal approach to teaching with a partly curriculum-based education. This means that everyone will be free to choose their own way of teaching and may bring their own ideas into class. By showing initiative and enthusiasm the options are endless. You’ll help the qualified teachers with their lessons as well as developing informal English classes through activities such as music and song, conversation and grammar, arts, sports and games.

Day 1 - (Sunday)

Arrive at Udaipur airport (airport code UDR) and after clearing customs and immigration, you’ll be met by our local team and taken straight to your accommodation, a journey of under an hour, depending on traffic.

Days 2 - 6 (Monday to Friday)

During Intro week you will be participating in various activities to explore Udaipur and its beautiful surrounding countryside, to get acquainted with the local culture, language, religion, customs, history and social issues. The purpose of this week is to provide a gentle introduction to the craziness of India and to help you gain an understanding of the manners, norms and etiquette inherent in Indian society as well as to introduce you to your new surroundings.

Intro week is packed full of exciting adventures, cultural excursions and workshops. It includes yoga sessions, cooking classes, language lessons, visits to markets, palaces and temples, a boat trip on the lake, sunset sightseeing opportunities as well as orientation visits to our project locations around Udaipur.

Days 7 & 8 (Saturday & Sunday)

Spend your free time as you please, your weekends are yours to enjoy. There is so much to see and do in and around this beautiful city, you’ll simply love your time exploring!!

Days 9 -13 (Monday to Friday)

School time! The aim is education through fun and volunteers are encouraged to be creative with learning through books, games, songs, art, sport and music. Your role is to encourage and inspire but most importantly for teachers and students alike to enjoy the learning experience.

Kindergarten hours are 8.30-12.30, the special school 9.30-12.00. Volunteers choosing the special school option will be asked to follow on with an afternoon English language session as part of the community outreach initiative. Sessions run from 4.00-6.00pm for around 30 kids aged between 6 and 16.

A classroom assistant from overseas is always the source of much excitement and interest, so you are encouraged to bring along photos, maps and other visual aids from home. Volunteers with teaching experience and those without will both be able to make a very significant and worthwhile contribution here.

further weeks (Monday to Friday)

follow the same structure as above. The longer you are here, the greater the impact you will have and the more comfortable you will become with life in the classroom.

Your last day (Saturday)

Oh no …… no matter how long you’re here for, one of these days it will be time to say goodbye to your newfound friends. All departing volunteers will be transferred to the local bus station from where it is easy to arrange onward travel or a taxi back to the airport.

your digs

Volunteers will be accommodated in the projects volunteer house. Volunteers share a bunk-style room with three to five others, and bathrooms are shared. There are lockers for your valuables, wifi access, a mini library, a dining room and lounge area and a beautiful garden to relax.

All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

You will be provided with three meals a day on weekdays and two meals per day on weekends. Meals are a mix of Western and Indian food, consisting mainly of vegetarian dishes including rice and vegetables. You are welcome to use the kitchen facilities to cook for yourself or eat out at any of the local and inexpensive restaurants.
