helping kids in cusco

The historic and beautiful city of Cusco was the capital of the famous Inca Empire, and now commands its place at the centre of cultural tourism in Peru. But many families live in poverty in the suburbs.

Volunteers are needed to help out in community daycare centres for underprivileged kids in Cusco. You'll be placed at one of two community Mother’s Associations who support a large number of mothers in the area, providing care for their children when they are at work. “Little Doves” kinder takes care of around 35 children, aged between 3 and 5 years old and “Dawn” day-care looks after 30-40 children aged between 5 and 12 years old.

You will be involved with general childcare duties in support of the permanent members of staff, with volunteers involved in play, songs, art, dance, sports and games, assisting with mealtimes and homework.

itinerary

Day 1 & 2 (Saturday / Sunday)

Arrive at Cusco airport (airport code CUZ) and say Hola to Peru. Arrive any time of day and we’ll be there to meet you with a warm welcome, then it is straight to your accommodation, a journey of around 30 minutes depending on traffic. Cusco is 3,400m. above sea level, so it is really important to take things slowly in your first days after arrival – that way you’ll have the best chance to acclimatise quickly and avoid any symptoms of mild altitude sickness.

The Project

On Day 1, we’ll accompany you to your program where you will be introduced to the staff and kids. From here on in we will step back to allow you to own your experience – you will spend your days with the project staff with the reassurance that our in-country team are available if you need them.

The Mother’s Association of Altiva Canas and Pillao Matao support approx. 300 families who receive help to feed and take care of their children when they are at work. Both Centers receive support from a Peruvian institution called “Aldeas infantiles”. Volunteer support is welcomed at the Cuna Urpicha (in Quechuan “little doves”) which presently takes care of 35 children, aged between 3 to 5 years old. It operates at the “Salón Comunal”. A tutor, an assistant and a cook work in this day-care centre.

Help is also needed at the T’ikary (in Quechua “Dawn”) which offers day-care center to approximately 30 children aged between 5 to 12 years old. T’ikary operates in Quintina’s house, who is mother to 5 children. Besides Quintina, a tutor (Yovana) helps at this daycare center. Cuna Urpicha operates from 9:00am to 1:00pm. and T’ikary from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. Volunteers will generally work at one or the other program each day Monday to Friday. Volunteers should be positive, creative and cheerful and don’t take yourself too seriously. Consider bringing with you from home a few educational resource materials such as books or flash cards, photographs or postcards from home.

The Weekends

Weekends – your weekends are yours to do as you wish. There is so much to see and do in and around Cusco, so many places to explore. You’ll undoubtedly want to head to Machu Picchu at least once during your stay, and the Sacred Valley is full of interesting villages and towns, as well as Incan ruins of which Sacsayhuaman and Ollantaytambo are unmissable.

Domestic flights in Peru can cheaply have you spend a weekend in the capital Lima, at Lake Titicaca or deep in the Amazon jungle.

Last day – (Saturday)

Sadly, one of these days it is time to say adios to Cusco - our team will help you arrange your transfer back to the airport or onward to your next destination, just save a few soles for the ticket.

your digs

Your home is a lovely shared volunteer apartment. It is also classed as a homestay, as your host lives in another apartment in the same 4-storey building, and your meals are served here. Rooms are private or shared with one/two other volunteers - bathrooms are shared, with hot-water showers and western toilets provided. There is a fridge available for cool drinks and snacks, and there is a TV lounge and small garden/patio area.

Facilities and the area
Bedding is provided – no need to bring a sleeping bag, but do bring your own towel.
Laundry facilities are available for a small fee.
Cusco is an important tourist city, so you’ll find great cafes, bars and restaurants and all the facilities you might need. Banks and ATMs are easily accessible, some within 10 minutes’ walk of your accommodation, and there are shops, internet cafes, travel agencies, doctors and hospitals all within easy reach.
Cusco is an ideal place to relax and explore on weekends and after your school day has
